Become a volunteer of the Kilby Historic Site!

Do you like visiting museums and historic homes?  Do you enjoy art, history and/or learning about different cultures? Do you like being amongst interesting people and making new friends?  If so, becoming a volunteer at the Kilby Historic Site may be just for you! Local community members interested in participating in an active way at the Kilby Historic Site are encouraged to call us!

A background in art, history, research, teaching, guiding tours, museum studies, interacting with the public, or public speaking is helpful, but not required, as the Kilby Historic Site staff provides all necessary training. Volunteers are needed during the days and weekends for varied opportunities; as well as periodically assisting with special events and family oriented activities.

We are currently recruiting for all areas of the historic site. Not too great with the public, we also have a wonderful “behind the scenes” program, where your talents could be utilized in other areas such as costuming, marketing, reception, etc.

Interested in Volunteering?

Do you have a few hours a week or a month to you’d be willing to donate to a good cause?

Are you retired and looking for an opportunity to meet new people and give back at the same time?

Are you young and looking for valuable work experience?

Just looking for a new challenge?

Volunteering with us is highly flexible—you can work as much or as little as you choose. Join one (or more!) of our specialized teams (shown below) and we will provide you with everything you need. Experience is welcome but not necessary.

Events & Programs
This team helps with the delivery of special events and programs. It requires the largest number of helpers but is perfectly suited to those who can only commit their time once or twice a month. It’s also a lot of fun! Choose from tasks such as running the children’s craft station, handing out prizes, taking tickets, organizing games, decorating, or set up and take down.

Marketing & Outreach
This team is suited to those who enjoy networking with the public promoting Kilby Historic Site to a wider audience. Volunteers must be content to work off site without Kilby staff support. Time commitment is flexible. Usual tasks include distributing posters and promotional materials and selling Kilby products at Craft Fairs and exhibitions.

Farm & Garden
This team is suited to those who can commit to helping regularly and don’t mind their hands in the dirt! Choose from tasks such as helping maintain our flower and vegetable gardens, campground maintenance and upkeep, care of animals, and general site maintenance. If you have gardening, construction or carpentry skills we would love to have your expertise!

Museum & Interpretation
Joining this team requires a greater time commitment and willingness to attend training but the rewards are correspondingly great! Discover all the intimate details of our artefacts and history and get the chance to interact with the public while telling the story of Harrison Mills and the Kilby family.

All prospective volunteers must complete an application form, attend an interview and pass a criminal record check. You can apply for your criminal record check at your local police station. The service is free for volunteers.
